Moving To Marathon
Marathon is a small town and that's part of its charm, but it also has many of the comforts and conveniences of big-city life. For example: several DSL and wireless connections for the Internet, daily FedEx and UPS service, a water and sewer cooperative, a local health clinic (open Mondays and Thursdays), and elementary and high schools with a student-teacher ratio of 6-1, almost like a private school!
At more than 4,000 feet elevation, Marathon is blessed with a dry desert climate that is pleasant for all, particularly so for those who like outdoor living and recreation and for avid gardeners, who can boast of three growing seasons. Big Bend National Park is only 40 miles away, the Post Park, beloved by picnickers and birders, is 5 miles to the southwest, and the roads around Marathon, devoid of city traffic, welcome runners, bicyclists and motorcyclists.
Alpine, the county seat of Brewster County, where a full-service hospital and Sul Ross State University are located, is 32 miles away, and Midland, 2 1/2 hours distant, is the closest international airport.
