Welcome to the Marathon, Texas Events Site!

Marathon is proud to host many diverse and exciting events throughout the year. These events range from the Marathon 2 Marathon, a 26.2 mile foot race down Highway 385 between Ft. Stockton and Marathon and finishing in front of the historic Gage Hotel in Marathon. A very fitting race for the area considering that Marathon was founded by Albion Shepard, a sea captain who said the surrounding terrain reminded him of the plains of Marathon, Greece. The Marathon race commemorates the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger who ran the 26.2 miles from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce the defeat of the Persians in 490 BC. It is said he ran the entire distance without stopping to report the victory, before collapsing and dying. Modern Marathons of today however are much better organized and supported!

Additional events include the West Fest, a Steak and Cabrito (young goat) Cook-off, an increasingly popular event established in 2003 at which cooks compete for awards and cash prizes. Originally held in town in front of the Ritchey Bros. building, it has since been moved 5 miles south of town to the Post Park, a beautiful secluded pond and county park on the Pena Colorado river shaded by cottonwood trees and surrounded by Los Caballos Novaculite Mountains.

The Chili Cook-off, a two-day fundraising event held on the same weekend as the annual 4th of July dance, is a CASI-sanctioned, regional qualifying event where chili cooks from around the country compete, leading up to the World Championship cook-off held every November in Terlingua, TX.

Also not to be missed is the Fiesta De Noche Buena held the 1st weekend in December -- a convivial street party where locals, businesses and visitors alike gather to enjoy an evening of food, fun and dancing under the stars in the spirit of the holidays.

For a town of 450 people, Marathon is typically a quiet community, and as our slogan suggests, Where There's Nothing "to do", no, you won't find a 'To Do' list here. What you will find is a peaceful serene community, blessed with friendly people, beautiful surroundings and delightful climate, punctuated with vibrant, energetic events sure to cultivate fond memories and perhaps new friends!
